Dental Implants

Dental implants are an excellent way to restore your smile. If you have one or more missing teeth, implants may be right for you. Dental implants restore the entire tooth from the root to the biting surface. There are a few different types of appliances that your dentist can use with dental implants. For example, dental implants can be used as a base to secure dentures. For more information on the dental implants in Puyallup, WA, contact Johns Family and Implant Dentistry.

What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants consist of three main parts. The first part is the post which acts as the tooth’s root. First, the tooth must be removed entirely, including the root. The post is made of solid titanium material. The next part of the dental implant is the abutment that holds the implant’s post and the appliance together. The last part is the appliance of your choice. The type of appliance you choose depends on how many teeth you are replacing. If you replace one tooth, Dr. David Johns may recommend a dental crown. If you are replacing a few teeth, he may recommend a dental bridge. Lastly, if you miss a set of teeth on the top, bottom, or both, he may recommend a denture. Each dental appliance is secured in place with the dental implant. All options are fixed in your mouth, except the dentures can be removable.

What Happens During the Dental Implant Process?
The first step to many dental procedures is an x-ray. An x-ray gives Dr. David Johns, a good understanding of how your teeth sit. Next, he will prepare the gum space. If there is a tooth where you would like a dental implant, he may remove the tooth. Once the gum area is ready, Dr. David Johns will give you a local anesthetic to numb you. Next, to make you more comfortable, he may offer you sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry includes an oral sedation pill to help you relax. Finally, he will place the post. It will take a few weeks for the post to heal in place before he can place the abutment and the dental appliance. While you heal, Dr. Johns may give you a temporary dental appliance.

Dental Appliances for Dental Implants
Dental implants are posts that sit in your gums. Once the implant is placed and healed, your dentist can place a dental appliance. Below are a few examples of dental devices that can be placed.

Dental Crown. A dental crown is the part of your tooth above your gums. A dental crown is typically made of porcelain. The porcelain material makes a dental crown a solid and durable material. It is also stain-resistant. Unlike the other two dental appliance options, a dental crown only replaces one missing tooth.

Dental Bridge. A dental bridge consists of multiple dental crowns attached to make a bridge. A dental bridge allows your dentist to restore multiple teeth in a row with one dental appliance. Just like dental crowns, dental bridges replace the part of your tooth above the gums and are made of porcelain.

Dentures. Dentures come in two main types: removable and fixed. Both options are great solutions to repair one set or both sets of teeth.
